Welcome to Borough Market, London’s oldest and most famous food market! With over a thousand years of history, this place is a paradise for food lovers. Whether you’re craving fresh produce, international cuisine, or a taste of London’s culinary heritage, Borough Market has it all. Let’s dive in.
History
Borough Market dates back to at least the year 1014, when it was mentioned in Scandinavian sagas. Originally, it was a trading hub near London Bridge, attracting merchants from across the city. Over the centuries, it moved locations, faced closures, and was even revived by local traders in 1756, making it one of London’s most enduring markets. Did you know that in the 1970s, supermarkets nearly wiped out Borough Market? Food artisans saved it by transforming it into a gourmet hotspot.
Borough Market
Walking through Borough Market is a sensory overload! You’ll find everything from fresh seafood and organic vegetables to handmade chocolates and international street food. Some things to do here:
- Sample British classics like Scotch eggs and sausage rolls.
- Try global flavors like Spanish paella, Ethiopian coffee, and French pastries.
- Meet passionate vendors who share their craft and offer free tastings.
I tried some of this wild mushroom risotto and it was so delicious. You’ll see people lining up for it in the video! You know I’ll only bring you the best. Speaking of which, we walked down a little further and found one of the hotspots in Borough Market, Bread Ahead. Bread Ahead has a bakery and school in the market. You can watch them make the fresh loaves and desserts here. There’s a lot of variety here so if you have a sweet tooth, you’re in luck.

Weekends are busiest, especially Saturday mornings. Weekdays (usually from Tuesday to Thursday) offer a more relaxed experience. If you want to avoid crowds, try the mornings, before 11 am.
Pro tip: visit on a Friday afternoon if you want the weekend buzz without the overwhelming crowds. Want to make the most of your visit? Bring an empty stomach, trust me, you’ll want to try everything. Carry cash and card, most stalls accept both, but some prefer cash. Give yourself time to explore beyond the main square, there are hidden gems tucked away in side alleys. I’d also recommend you check for seasonal events. Borough Market hosts food festivals and tastings year-round.

The shard is literally walking distance from Borough Market so I popped over to get some views of the city, then after the food and detour, I spent the rest of the day at the Tate Modern, one of my favorite museums here. What are some of your favorite places in London? Video cameras are not allowed in the Tate Modern. Follow my socials for more: Instagram and TikTok.
